Curt Marsh excelled as an athlete, especially in football. He played for the University of Washington and participated in three Bowl Games and two college All-star games. After his senior season, Curt was selected as a college All-American, named Lineman of the Year for the U of W and was named as one of the Best 100 Football Players in University of Washington history.
In 1981 Curt was the 1st round draft pick of the Oakland Raiders. As a rookie, Curt became a starting offensive guard and was voted to the NFL All-Rookie Team. Throughout his career Curt was rated as one of the top players in the league at his position. The high point in Curt's outstanding 7-year NFL career was his membership on the 1983 Raider Super Bowl Championship Team.
Curt's NFL career was cut short in 1987 due to a severe ankle injury, which eventually led to the amputation of his right foot and ankle in 1994. After being fitted with an artificial leg, Curt was determined to not act "disabled" and started training to compete in events organized for wheelchair and amputee athletes. He set his sights on becoming a champion in the sport of weightlifting. He accomplished his goal, after a year of intense work, when he competed in the "1995 Wheelchair and Amputee National Championships" and won the Gold Medal in power lifting. Curt's inspiring story has been featured on ESPN, CNN, and ABC's Nightline, as well as being chronicled in many national publications including a feature story in Sports Illustrated. After retiring from the NFL in 1987, Curt purchased a vending company in Seattle, Washington. He successfully managed ProVend for three years. While operating his business, Curt began volunteering as a motivational speaker to schools in the Northwest. The company sold in 1990 allowing Curt to pursue his interest in working with youth. In 1990, he was hired as the Youth Programs Coordinator for the City of Everett, in Washington State. Curt still found time to be a speaker and state spokesperson for the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association's "High Five" drug and alcohol prevention program. Curt continued to work for the City of Everett for nine years ending his career as the Superintendent of Recreation. As Superintendent, Curt and his team won many prestigious local and national honors for outstanding service to youth. These successes led to Curt being invited to speak at State and National Parks and Recreation Conferences to share his philosophy and tactics.
Curt began his professional speaking career as a part-time venture in 1991. Since that time he has spoken to nearly a million young people and hundreds of businesses, associations, and community groups throughout the United States and Canada, earning a reputation as a highly skilled motivational communicator. Curt retired from the City of Everett in 1999 to pursue his passion for public speaking full-time and to undertake the challenge of becoming a successful writer. Curt currently lives in Snohomish, Washington with his best friend and wife, Pam, their two sons Jake and CJ, and wonderful daughter Jillian. |
